When to have mezuzot and tefillin checked

Mezuzah and tefillin do not share one schedule

Shulchan Arukh, Yoreh De’ah 291:1, states that a privately owned mezuzah is checked twice in seven years. Orach Chayim 39:10 distinguishes regularly used tefillin established as kosher from those used only occasionally. Ask a qualified scribe how the rules apply to your items.

Act sooner after damage

Moisture, a cracked case, unusual heat, impact or uncertain long-term storage are reasons to ask about earlier inspection. Do not open tefillin housings or attempt to repair parchment yourself. Label where each mezuzah came from and ask how to handle the doorway while its scroll is away.

Ask what was actually inspected

Human review and computer scanning serve different purposes. Ask which parts were examined, what was found and what follow-up is recommended. Contact Ruby Judaica to ask about inspection options; availability and timing are not promised here.
